British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
